Her Instrument, Her Voice

Rosa picked up the viola in fourth grade in Salina, KS — 30 years ago — and never put it down. The viola isn't a side offering at her studio; it's her voice. She earned her AA in Music with Honors at Cabrillo College and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from San Jose State University in 2021, performing viola in chamber groups, symphonies, mariachi ensembles, and theater pit orchestras along the way.

That depth shows in every lesson. From a young beginner's first open strings to advanced shifting, vibrato, and alto-clef reading, students learn the viola from someone who has lived its repertoire — from the Suzuki books through chamber and symphony literature. Today Rosa is the Upper Strings Teaching Artist for YOSAL and the String Methods Instructor at Georgiana Bruce Kirby Preparatory School in Santa Cruz — and she takes private viola students at her home studio in Watsonville.

Booking is simple and personal: request a lesson through the booking form, and Rosa replies herself to confirm your spot. Se habla español — Spanish-speaking families are warmly welcomed.

Viola Families Ask

Not harder — just different. The viola is a little larger, with a deeper, warmer voice and its own clef (alto clef). Many students love that it's less common: violists are always in demand in school orchestras and youth symphonies.
Violas come in fractional sizes just like violins, and the right fit depends on arm length. Rosa will measure and confirm the right size at the first lesson — no need to buy or rent anything before you come.
